A good input metric[1] is one that enables us to monitor and change our behavior. It should have the following characteristics:
1. Focus – it measures one thing.
2. Ownership –a specific person is accountable for its performance and accuracy of the measurement.
3. Benchmark – there is a target which informs whether or not performance is satisfactory.
A Note On Benchmarking
We can challenge our teams by asking, ‘what can be done to improve this metric by 5% over last year?’ The answers are going to be tweaks to the existing system.
But what needs to be done to improve our performance 2x over last year? What about 5x? Or 10x? These answers are going to be very different. They have to be big ideas; a sea-change from the status-quo.
Incremental is important. It is also easier and more comfortable. It’s up to us as leaders to know which question we need to ask to up our game for the long term.
Those are the characteristics of good metrics.
