My reflections in real time on becoming a parent.
Last week we got some sushi for breakfast. It was technically 12:30pm but it seemed like breakfast since we woke up late.
Apparently you can’t eat sushi when you’re pregnant so it had been like 10 months since we went out. My sympathy cravings were running high.
As Lila, mom, and I are starting to get used to the idea that we actually live together it’s fun realizing that we also get to make up all the rules.

We stopped at Trader’s afterwards to get some rations when the checkout girl said to Nikki, ‘Hey aren’t you guys in a band?’ She recognized us (ok she recognized Nikki) from some of our music videos on the West Seattle blog.
‘Do you guys get that a lot?’ she asked.
‘All the time,’ I said. This had never happened before
If having Lila was the 1st best moment of my life, this was definitely the 2nd. It’s been a good month.

My brother and folks made it out for their first time meeting their niece and granddaughter.
I was getting a lot of holiday credit for having a child even though my wife had done all the work.
This was a racket. Good stuff.

Now with one week left of paternity leave I’m starting to visualize normal life again, only this time with a kid.
The overwhelming sentiment is that I find myself thankful.
I think this whole process is one that makes me more aware of our blessings and the responsibility to pay it forward.

I just realized this is the last post of 2019 so I’m trying to find some key learnings that I can share with you from the year.
If anything, after a year of writing, music, and moving some other projects forward I’ve started to appreciate the process as the reward. As we transition from mere survival to a new normal I’m looking forward to working on this next year’s slate of projects under this new paradigm.
While I am definitely goal oriented, I am trying to appreciate that having goals also serves to provide us with good work to work on.
So we’ll see you in 2020 with another year of blog posts, a slew of new ‘Finance Guys…’ podcast episodes, progress on getting the children’s book closer towards completion, and the potential return of For Now music to the Seattle music scene.
I love the mystery of not knowing what will come out of doing the work while simultaneously being certain that what will come out of it will be tremendously exciting and fun.
I’ll leave you with the ‘writers prayer’ that I made up and say to myself whenever I start a new journal: that by the time these pages are full may I be a completely different person.
Thanks for a great year friends. See you in 2020, let’s keep it going. Love you all.
